  23. In view of the frequency with which this question arises,
  24. I wonder if it would not be wiser for Karl to take these "make format"
  25. commands out of the main "make"?
  26. People could still run them by "make formats" or whatever.

  28. Another reason is the fact that LaTeX now has a Makefile itself
  29. (or at least a Makefile.unx) in .../base ,
  30. and it might well make more sense to run this.

  32. The answer to the question is that the 2 tar.gz files you mention
  33. only contain the sources for TeX _programs_,
  34. and do not contain TeX or MF input files or fonts.

  36. I believe these are stored in lib.tar.gz ,
  37. though I prefer to collect my own,
  38. particularly in view of the frequency with which LaTeX is being changed
  39. at the moment.
